Platybelodon is an extinct genus of proboscidean that lived during the Miocene epoch, approximately 15 to 5 million years ago. It was a distant relative of modern-day elephants and was characterized by its distinctive flattened, shovel-like lower tusks. Platybelodon was about the size of a modern-day elephant, with a long, prehensile trunk and four column-like legs. Fossils of Platybelodon have been found in various parts of the world, including Asia, Europe, and North America. It is believed that Platybelodon fed on aquatic plants and used its flattened tusks to dig in the mud for food. Its extinction is thought to have been due to competition with other herbivorous mammals and environmental changes.
