Yury Gagarin (1934-1968) was a Soviet pilot and cosmonaut who became the first human to journey into outer space, completing a single orbit of the Earth aboard the Vostok 1 spacecraft on April 12, 1961. Gagarin became an international hero and celebrity, receiving numerous honors and awards for his historic achievement. He tragically died in a plane crash in 1968 at the age of 34.
