Yury Gagarin (1934-1968) was a Soviet pilot and cosmonaut who became the first human to journey into outer space, completing a single orbit of the Earth aboard the Vostok 1 spacecraft on April 12, 1961. His achievement marked a significant milestone in the Space Race between the Soviet Union and the United States during the Cold War era. Gagarin became an international hero and celebrity, receiving numerous honors and awards for his historic achievement. He tragically died in a plane crash in 1968 at the age of 34.
