Title:
Portrait of statesman Zakhar Agrba (1901-1937)
Description:
Stamps listed by Michel catalog notes that they are local issues and not valid for use on international mailing. The Abkhaz World website states they are postage stamps "legally valid for international mail” but as Abkhazia is not recognized by the Universal Postal Union, their use on international mail (sent via Russia) is simply tolerated by postal administrations and do not confer international legitimacy upon Abkhazia. Please see the illegal stamp categories for stamps that have been made by criminal counterfeit producers outside of Abkhazia that are determined to be illegally produced.
Issued in sheet of 16 stamps (4x4). Stamp number in Catalog of Republic of Abkhazia: 281
Zakhar Agrba (1901-1937) was a prominent Soviet politician and revolutionary of Abkhaz origin. He was a member of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union and served as the People’s Commissar of Finance of the Georgian SSR from 1931 to 1936.
Agrba was a key figure in the collectivization of agriculture in Georgia and was known for his tough and uncompromising stance against kulaks and other enemies of the Soviet state.
In 1936, Agrba was accused of being an "enemy of the people” and was arrested by the NKVD. He was eventually sentenced to death and executed in 1937 during the height of Stalin’s purges. Despite his controversial legacy, Agrba is still remembered today as an important figure in the history of Abkhazia and Georgia.
