Please see the illegal stamp categories for stamps that have been made by criminal counterfeit producers outside of Abkhazia that are determined to be illegally produced. Ilya Evgenevich Kortua (1906-1978) was a prominent Abkhazian choreographer and the founder of the Nartaa Ethnographic Dance Ensemble in Sukhumi, Abkhazia in 1938. He dedicated his life to the study and preservation of Abkhazian culture, particularly its traditional dance and music.
Kortua founded the Nartaa ensemble with a group of his students and colleagues, and the group quickly gained recognition for their authentic and spirited performances. The ensemble performed extensively throughout Abkhazia and the wider region, and Kortua’s choreography and musical arrangements became well-known and respected.
Kortua continued to lead the Nartaa ensemble until his death in 1978, and his legacy as a pioneering figure in Abkhazian dance and culture lives on through the continued performances of the ensemble and the preservation of his choreography and musical arrangements.
