Title:

Algerian Revolution

Description:
The issue of the first postage stamp of independent Algeria took place on 1 November 1962, the commemoration date of the 8th anniversary of the Algerian Revolution, with a face value of 1 NF surcharged 9 NF.
The creation of this postage stamp, bearing the words in the national language “Democratic People’s Republic of Algeria”, is an act of sovereignty and a national philatelic accomplishment made by a team of young Algerians in an Algerian printing company.
The Algerian Revolution was a war of independence fought by Algerian nationalists against French colonial rule in Algeria from 1954 to 1962. The conflict was marked by guerrilla warfare, acts of terrorism, and the use of torture by both sides. The National Liberation Front (FLN), a political and military organization, led the Algerian struggle for independence. The French government initially responded with a policy of repression, but after eight years of fighting and growing international pressure, France eventually granted Algeria its independence on July 3, 1962. The war resulted in the deaths of an estimated 1 million Algerians and thousands of French settlers and soldiers. It also had significant geopolitical consequences, including the fall of the Fourth French Republic and the rise of Charles de Gaulle’s Fifth Republic.
