Title:

Red Coral (Corallium rubrum)

Description:
The image on the stamp is based on a photo.
Corallium rubrum, commonly known as red coral, is a species of marine coral found in the Mediterranean Sea. It is highly valued for its use in jewelry-making and has been harvested for this purpose for thousands of years. Red coral grows at depths of between 10 and 300 meters and typically forms tree-like structures made up of calcium carbonate. Due to over-harvesting and environmental degradation, populations of red coral have declined in recent decades, and the species is now protected in many areas.
