Game Summary:
In Chuck Norris Superkicks, players assume the role of the martial arts superstar as he tries to battle his way through ninjas and other enemies to reach and liberate a hostage from what the manual describes as an "ancient monastery.” (Note that this isn’t Chuck Norris playing a role, but apparently just Mr. Norris himself -- so that’s what he does when he’s not filming Walker, Texas Ranger!) Players must guide Norris along the path to the monastery, and at regular intervals the action stops and switches to a fight screen, in which Norris must use karate to defeat an enemy before proceeding. If he’s not careful, his opponent will lodge a throwing star in his gut, forcing Norris to start again from the bottom of the map screen. The "belt” most recently earned is denoted by the color of the player’s score (the black belt, naturally, being the high level that can be achieved), and a timer counts down to the end of the game.
More an exercise in frustration than fun, Chuck Norris Superkicks features some clunky graphics (the characters are smoothly animated, but the environments around them scroll downward in a very clumsy way), and the Atari VCS really isn’t suited to a fighting game in which combination moves are required. It takes time and patience to reach a level of proficiency at which playing the game is even tolerable, much less fun.
Chuck Norris Superkicks also sometimes appears as "Kung Fu Superkicks” since Xonox had a limited time window in which they had permission to use Norris’ name in connection with the game. They did make the most of it, however, as it appeared not only on its own cartridge, but on no fewer than three of the Xonox double-ender cartridges. Chuck Norris Superkicks could be found on the same cartridge with Spike’s Peak, Ghost Manor or Artillery Duel.
