500 years after the original Breath of Fire, a new legend begins with Ryu, a descendant of the now-fabled Dragon Clan. As a young child, Ryu falls asleep next to the remains of a large dragon near his hometown of Gate, only to find that when he awakens, the world around him has mysteriously changed. His father and sister have vanished, and no one else in town recognizes him. The only solace he can find is in the Church of St. Eva, where he is taken in as an orphan.
While exploring a nearby cave with his new friend Bow, Ryu encounters a frightening demon who leaves him alive, but cryptically refers to him as the ”Destined Child”. Ten years later, Ryu and Bow have taken a job as Rangers. While investigating the case of a lost pet, a bizarre series of events lead them to suspect that a sinister force may be at work in the world. Enlisting the help of a new generation of heroes, Ryu must journey deep into the earth to eliminate the source of the evil before it is too late.
