Game Summary:
Fate/Unlimited Codes follows the same story and characters as the aforementioned Fate/stay night franchise. Codes revolves around seven pairs of Masters and Servants that must battle each other in order to obtain the Holy Grail. These "Holy Grail Wars” decide which pair is worthy enough to take the grail and subsequently have all of their wishes come true. While the Masters in Codes are usually human sorcerers, or Magi, the Servants tend to be spiritual manifestations of ancient heroes from previous ages. The main character, Shiro, uses his magic to (unintentionally) summon Saber -- one of the most powerful Servants to compete in the Holy Grail Wars.

This anime-style fighter takes the principles of 2D fighting and puts them on a 3D plane. This might sound similar to titles like Soulcalibur and Dead or Alive, but Codes feels much more like a straight 2D fighter. Every fighter on the roster has a light, medium and heavy attack as well as a Reflect Guard. These four commands make up the basics of the Fate/Unlimited Codes battle system.
Although most combat takes place on a flat plane, you can command your character to roll towards or away from the camera by hitting both the medium and heavy attack at once along with a direction on the D-pad. This gives players more space control and another option for evading incoming attacks, but traditional blocking is obviously the best defensive strategy to employ.
During battle, players must consider three separate gauges which influence the outcome of the match. Each character obviously has a health gauge, which is filled several times over with different colors. Both fighters also have a magic gauge that dictates how many different bursts, cancels and super moves they can do. A Magic Burst knocks an opponent back and also temporarily boosts the power of the fighter. Cancels, on the other hand, come in a variety of flavors, but my favorite is a simple dashing cancel that can be used to link techniques together for gigantic combos. And of course super moves are your typical flashy affairs that leave your opponent low on health.
Lastly, a Holy Grail Gauge is shared between the two characters and is filled up as you land strikes. When it fills, your character can use a Magic Burst and is made even more powerful.
